- Beehive Buildings - Clearance of the alleys near the Dog & Fox and the construction in 1869 of improved low rent housing for 48 workmens' families changed the appearance of that corner. (Re-named Allington Close in 1937, the eight blocks survived until 1975 when they were replaced by the Haygarth Place development.) Few heads of the young families who lived there (261 adults and children in 1881) had been born in Wimbledon. They worked, for example, as craftsmen, gardeners, labourers or domestic servants.4
